Solo Travel

Traveling Solo

Traveling solo has really become popular in recent years.  There is no reason for anyone to feel insecure about traveling abroad by themselves.  Many people are choosing to explore the world and feeling empowered, including women.    Even married couples have embraced the solo travel trend.

Why?

Travelers have a different type of experience while traveling alone.  Many of us have different travel preferences.  This is the reason why some married couples take some excursions separately--giving themselves permission to explore different things.

What do solo travelers do?

You can choose from so many activities to fill your time while traveling alone.  One that comes to mind is taking a spa treatment or a health retreat.  It's all up to what YOU want to do.   Whether it is lounging by a pool, enjoying rays on the beach, snorkeling, or taking a tour, there are many great solo vacation ideas to keep one entertained and amused while on vacation.  Just because you travel alone doesn't mean that you will spend all your time alone.  Your days will be filled with as many meaningful activities and interactions as you desire, based on your planning, creativity, and imagination.   Remember to keep an open mind so that you can enjoy every moment of your solo adventure.

How to remain safe

When traveling alone, Travel safety tips are similar to precautions you would would take at any other time.  According to the United Nations Tourism Organization, individual travelers should always research their destination in advance.  Be aware of the area and have a general idea how to get to places surrounding your chosen accommodation.   It also helps to have some knowledge of the tourist attractions and local flavor before arriving.  Armed with a basic background of the area will give you a level of confidence about the place where you will spend some time exploring.

Take time to learn about the culture and what to expect when visiting.  If you can learn some  phrases of the local language,  that will help to give you even more confidence on the ground.

Also, read some travel reviews to see what others have experienced.   Reviews will help give you an overall feel of the destination and what it has to offer tourists.

Always consult the Travel Alerts  for your destination on The US State Department before you travel.   The color coded Travel Advisory is designed to alert you to crimes committed against tourists in that area and how to take the necessary precautions to stay safe.  In some cases, as in Level 4 (Red color coding), it is advised that you Do Not Travel to these areas..

Solo travelers should share their itinerary with trusted friends and family to let them know where you are staying and alert them to other places your likely to visit. Doing so will give you and your family peace of mind in knowing that if something happens, they will have a way to reach you.

What is STEP?

Consider enrolling in the United States State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  The STEP Program is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

And last but not least, be sure to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself as you travel.
